Week 2: The Power of Music

The lecture this week was about how music impacts its listeners. At the end of the lecture, Professor Coyne invited us to think about if we were a song, which song we would be. This question reminded me of a time when my boss asked my co-workers and I to share what our "heart song" was that day in order to get to know each other better. When I hear "heart song" I picture Maria singing "The Sound of Music" She cannot contain herself, am I right?

I loved hearing what my classmates and co-workers said, I loved discovering new music.

However, I haven't always enjoyed talking about my music preferences. Its so personal! It's difficult to share things about myself that could be potentially rejected. I think thats why music has the potential to create such strong bonds between people. As I started discovering more music that I liked, I realized that I had this urge to share it with people. I would reach out to my siblings and friends to share a new song. What I loved was how a lot of them would then share songs with me

Sharing music definitely strengthened our relationship which was so cool to me! This realization made me more willing to share music with people. Music was one of the first things my husband and I bonded over, we are always talking about music we love and sharing new songs with each other. I think its so cool that music not only has the capacity to influence us individually, but also effect our relationships.

  1. These are some great insights! I bond so much with the songs I like that someone's opinion of those songs can feel like their opinion of me, especially if that person is close to me. My husband and I luckily have a huge overlap on the kinds of music we like, and we've come to appreciate the fact that we like some genres or bands that the other person doesn't like. Relationships tend to be a balance of sharing interests and appreciating differences in that way. It's great to listen to each other's songs and learn a little more about each other, whether SO, sibling, or friend. :)

  2. I agree so much with your statement about how music is so personal. It can be so hard to share music with other for fear of embarrassment. But it can also strengthen a relationship. Its so TRUE!! - Abrielle Tolman
