Week 5: Times Have Changed
This past weekend, we got together to celebrate our brother, Trevor's, 31st birthday. I am the sixth of seven children, six girls and one boy. When we were all hanging out, we were doing a lot of reminiscing as we shared our favorite memories of our brother. Something that we all distinctly remember about him growing up was his love for Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, and Tetris. We owned a Nintendo 64 as well as a Game Boy so we were talking about all the different games we would play with Trevor.
As I contemplated this discussion, it dawned on me that some people will never really know what a Nintendo 64 is or what a Game Boy is. As we progress in technology, the way we're entertained also changes. Now we have things like virtual reality which is very different compared to the games my siblings grew up playing.
However, while a lot has changed, its fascinating to see what games are considered "classic". Nintendo, for example, is still producing games but they're played differently. My 18-year-old brother-in-law knows Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros, but he plays them on his Switch, not a Nintendo 64.
What is consistent is that there is still a market for video games. But I can't wait to see what comes next.
