Week 7: Babysitting
This week, I've been visiting my cousin's family! She has three little kids, ages 6, 5, and 3, that I've been watching while she and her husband go on a trip. As she was giving me the low down of information before they left for their trip, she made it clear that she keeps TV time to a minimum, which is why she gave me a list of other activities to do with them.
My cousin explained to me that she is very careful about the amount of time she lets them watch TV because it has the potential to just become easier and easier to let them watch more and more. She doesn't want to lean on that so much that they watch TV all day and they barely interact with each other. I think that is super wise, especially after learning about impact TV shows and movies can have on children.
However, this week has exposed me to the temptation to just let them watch movies or shows so that I can catch a break. I've come to really empathize with parents who have children, especially young children who require so much attention. This experience has got me thinking about all the things we've learned in this class and the value of media as well as the potential dangers and how they correlate with each age.
I want to make sure I'm intentional as well about how what and when my children watch- I know its going to be tricky though.
