Week 11: Finding Hope

Last week I posted about the various stressors associated with posting on social media for me. This week, I watched a video published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that eliminated many of those stressors.

"Finding Hope in Broken Dreams" | Liz Wiseman:

In this video, Liz Wiseman mentions 3 things we can do to find hope, which I think can apply to multiple areas of our lives, including how we use social media.

1. Eschew perfectionism
2. Let the cracks show
3. Look to the right source for healing

Perfectionism has a stronger presence in my life than I am proud to admit. But correcting the idea that anyone out there has a perfect life, I can relax and just do the best I can. However, I think it's also important to live my life in a way that brings me the most joy and if that looks different to me than someone else, I need to not worry about it so much. It's my life, I should do what brings me the most joy.

Letting the cracks show is significant principle because when we are vulnerable and open with our community about our challenges and disappointments that makes us more relatable. This is something that helps eliminate perfectionism. I can encourage my circle of influence to be more authentic and real by being that way first. Letting your world know that things aren't always amazing is hard, but it's real and relatable.

Looking to the right source for healing is important because all of us will feel broken at times. The right source for healing is our Savior, Jesus Christ. He will help us heal- he can help us make long-term changes. Short-term fixes, like food, shopping, social media or other tendencies only distract us and comfort us short-term.

These concepts helped me realize that I'm mostly resistant to posting on social media because I feel like I don't live up to the ideal that I see everyone else posting about. But this video was a breath of fresh air because she helped me realize that I was experiencing perfectionism. She also helped me realize that I don't need to hid my cracks, they make me who I am and it brings people together.

  2. This sounds like a good video! I also struggle with perfectionism and I think those with perfectionistic tendencies need to be reminded frequently to not stress about having a perfect life. Thanks for sharing!
