Week 9: Scrolling

This week, I've caught myself scrolling on social media a lot more than I usually do. I would consider myself pretty scroll-conscious, I feel that I am aware of how much time I've spent on an app and that I have a decent amount of self-control. However, this week, I reverted to looking at Facebook, Instagram, or Pinterest more than usual.

I also noticed that this week has been the busiest week of my semester so far. When I first made this discovery, it seemed counterintuitive. Why would I be on social media more when I have less free time? I think it's because I use scrolling through social media as a distraction or an escape of sorts. If I've been studying for a long time, I'll then spend more time on an app to give myself a break. Sometimes, I will intentionally leave my phone in another room to increase the odds of being more productive.

Making these observations about me, a 23-year-old in 2020, got me thinking about how interesting it would be to compare how people decompress now as opposed to 50 years ago.

  1. I feel the same way!! I was super busy last week as well, but spent way more time on my phone than usual. Definitely something I want to pay more attention to!
